History

Cable-Station-Nelson-NZ-300x188A historic place for local Maori, Cable Bay has also featured highly in early European history of the area, being the site of the terminus of the trans-Tasman telegraph cable which came ashore here in the early part of the 20th century.

The Cable Bay Café premises was built as tearooms in the 1920s by the Wiffen Family for weekend visitors from Nelson, after the closure of the trans-Tasman Cable Station at the bay.

The couple, Ernest (nick-named Dandy) Wiffen and Violet Powell-Wiffen, were mostly self-sufficient, keeping cows and hens and also growing strawberries to serve with cream in the tearooms. There was no electricity in those days and the menu was limited. The milk and cream were kept cool during hot weather in a screened safe under the macrocarpa trees outside. Mrs Wiffen served teas with homemade lemonade and sandwiches, and pikelets and scones baked in a woodstove.

Now it is the site of one of Nelson’s best little cafes.

About Us

outside cable bay cafe nelsonThe Cable Bay Café overlooks the Cable Bay estuary and Pepin Island, 20 minutes drive north of Nelson.

There is seating for up to 20 people inside the café but a further 60-70 can be seated outside on the terrace, the road frontage and in the garden.

Our car park is on the same level as the café, with a designated disabled space, so the café is easily accessible for guests with wheelchairs or walking frames. We also have a disabled toilet.

cablebay cafe nelsonFor our younger guests, we have a sandpit, kids picnic bench and toy box, and for our very small guests we have highchair and changing facilities. We also have a children’s menu to fill hungry tummies coming off of the beach.

Our menu will again be updated for the up coming 2017/18 season but will of course include our fish and chips and the success stories of 2016/17. We always have a fantastic selection of cakes, muffins, scones and biscuits on offer, which are all baked on the premises. We also cater for our vegetarian and gluten-free guests, ensuring there are always menu and cake options available.

cable bay cafe gardenFor the new season we have again teamed up with Brightwater Vineyards and we have added Steinlager to our offering of local beer. As a summer special we will be introducing pitchers of Pimms to help you enjoy the afternoons and will be looking at other ways to add to the Cable Bay experience.

Our coffee is roasted by Sublime Coffee and really is sublime!
